Teaching
from an international perspective
for an international context
in an international setting

NHL Stenden
At NHL Stenden, we educate our students to become world professionals. Internationalization is one of our three strategic pillars. We encourage both our students and staff to look beyond their own world and familiar culture. In this way, we develop new knowledge and skills and can participate in innovative projects in different contexts. In the latter, our strong ties with governments, companies and institutions in the region also help. Within the region, we cooperate within the framework of “brede welvaart” (a Dutch term focussing on thriving communities).

We provide a high-quality and unique programme for International Teacher Education (ITE). Our ITE programmes prepare students for roles in international schools, offering bachelor courses for teaching in primary and secondary education and a special track ITE in the masters Learning & Innovation (MITE). With a commitment to diversity and inclusion, we cultivate a supportive learning environment in which students from various cultural backgrounds feel at home. Over 600 international students are part of our ITE community and most of them live in or around Meppel. About 70 percent of them are non-Dutch and our staff comes from various countries within and outside Europe. All courses are delivered by a faculty with extensive experience in working in international education and are offered in English. The professorship International Teacher Education will also be based at our campus in Meppel.

The professorship is part of The Academy of Primary Education and the Academy of Secondary and Vocational education. The professors of both academies form one education research group including professorships in ‘Multilingualism & Literacy’, ‘Education for Sustainable and Democratic Living Together’, ‘Professorship of Subject Matter en Vocational Pedagogy’ and ‘International Teacher Education’. The Professor of International Teacher Education reports directly to the academy director of Primary Education.

Vision for the professorship
Teaching from an international perspective involves beginning with the global, planetary perspective to identify challenges, concerns and ways forward that inform the role and potential role of education in the lives of people and in the safeguarding of our planet, today.

Teaching for an international context involves identifying the knowledge, skills, attitudes and foci of attention that future teachers ought to have to support the learning and development of all students in a wide variety of contexts – international, local, formal, nonformal and beyond.

Teaching in an international setting involves the knowledge, skills and attitudes that lecturers, teacher trainers, teachers and school leaders in the field employ to ensure that they are well-equipped (and believe they are well-equipped) to support the learning and development of each of their students in a safe, respectful, learner-centered, diverse and pluralistic environment.

Professor of International Teacher Education
As a professor, you are a leader and authority in your field. You conduct innovative, complex and multidisciplinary research in the formulated areas of emphasis. You direct the (future) lecture-researchers in your group through the development of a multi-year research plan, with diverse research strands, programmes, projects, multi-year planning and budget and manage the research group.

You take a leading role in positioning this professorship by seeking and connecting expertise regionally and internationally. In co-creation with lecturers and students, you contribute to the development of education in which internationalization is central. In addition, the professor is expected to build the connection with the programmes of both Educational Academies and the work field into a sustainable cooperation.

By working towards impact in professional practice, education and professionalization and knowledge development in the field of international teacher education, the professorship will add to theoretical and practical knowledge at Academy, university, regional, national and international levels.

The professor responds to their own research task (see the goal described above) together with fellow professors in the Education research group. This research group is part of the “brede welvaart” team, in which related research groups work together on the themes of education, care and economics with the aim of strengthening the region.
